An Giang: The Project “Community Based Disaster Management”

12:58:0, 12/03/2012 In order to effectively increase the capability of the disaster prevention system and the awareness of the community about natural disasters, and also to provide a premise for the Government’s Project 1002 and the “National Strategy for the Prevention, Response, and Minimisation of Natural Resources until 2020”, An Giang Province has launched the Project “Community Based Disaster Management” sponsored by the Australian NGO (Care) with a non-return fund of 36.000 USD until June 2012.

The Project focuses on 4 villages: Thạnh Mỹ Tây, Bình Phú (Châu Phú), Vĩnh Lộc, Vĩnh Hậu (An Phú). The purpose of the Project is to increase the ability, awareness, information and experience sharing via 9 activities including: by means of establishing core groups comprising of unions and disaster prevention agents from provinces and villages, assess the levels of casualties, spread the awareness of disaster risk and climate change; organise training programmes for agents and residents on natural disasters levels and necessary responses, community based and otherwise, for teachers to compose lectures and suitable documents on the prevention of and coping with natural disasters in order to spread the awareness and especially to build up a force to spread the knowledge after the Project has ended.

An Giang has since long had rich visual programmes to enhance disaster awareness such as the use of butterfly documents, mass media, and especially in 2011, the use of printed messages about “The prevention of child drowning in flooded regions”, “3 safety steps for households before, during, and after floods” onto 150.000 notebooks given to students in flooded areas. Despite great casualties caused by floods, An Giang residents are still careless with big floods. Therefore, this Project will continue to remind people of the awareness and experience of living with floods safely.
