Damage caused by natural disasters from early 2020 and October 2020 (updated 11/06/2020)

I. DISASTER SITUATION FROM THE FIRST 2020

Since the beginning of the year until now, natural disasters have happened complicatedly and abnormally in many regions of the country. 16 types of natural disasters have occurred: 10 storms in the East Sea; 263 thunderstorms, cyclones and heavy rains in 49 provinces / cities, of which 09 were large-scale in 21 provinces, Northern and Central cities; 101 floods, flash floods, landslides; especially the historic heavy flood from October 6 to 22 in the central region, especially in the provinces from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien Hue; 82 earthquakes, including 02 earthquakes with disaster risk level 4 (in Muong Te, Lai Chau on June 16 with magnitude 4.9; in Moc Chau, Son La on 27/7 with magnitude 5.3); droughts, severe saltwater intrusion, riverbank and coastal erosion, sea dyke subsidence in the Mekong Delta, ...

As of November 6, 2020, natural disasters had:

- About people: 340 people died and were missing (275 died, 65 were missing, of which: storm 25; flood 97; landslide 130; tornado, hail 54; other natural disasters 34) and 819 people suffered love;

- Regarding housing: 3,276 houses collapsed, 280,766 houses were damaged, their roofs blown up; 414,451 houses were flooded.

- Regarding agriculture: 171,337 ha of rice and crops were damaged; 49,658 cattle, 3,366,417 poultry died and were swept away.

- Regarding irrigation: 550km of embankment and canal were eroded and damaged; 115km of coastline and river were eroded.

- About traffic: 881 km of road was damaged; volume of lands, rocks about 3.17 million m3.

Estimated economic loss is more than 33,449 billion VND.

II. NATURE OF OCTOBER 2020

In October 2020, natural calamities occurred repeatedly, with 04 storms (No. 6, 7, 8 and 9), 01 low pressure area and 01 tropical low pressure affecting the mainland and 02 historical heavy rains. , lasted in the central region from October 6-13 and October 16-20, in which the damage caused by two floods and storms No. 9 was as follows:

1. Damage caused by floods from October 6-20:

As of November 6, 2020, rain and flood in the central region caused the following damage:

- About people: 154 people died and were missing, of which 138 died, 16 were missing (flood 65; landslide 64; other causes 25) and 398 injured;

- Housing: 6,235 houses collapsed, damaged, 377,556 times of houses were flooded.

- Regarding agriculture: 16,692 ha of rice and crops; 105,090 tons of food got wet, washed away; 2,683,553 dead cattle and poultry.

- Regarding irrigation: 121 km of embankment; 264 km canal was landslide and damaged; 73.5km of river bank, coastline was eroded.

- About traffic: 576 km of roads were eroded, about 1.56 million m3 of soil and stone landslide.

Estimated initial economic damage is about 15,469 billion VND.

2. Damage caused by Storm No. 9

- About people: 83 people died and were missing, of which 40 died, 43 were missing (storm 23; flood 9; landslide 46; other causes 5) and 140 injured.

- On housing: 189,649 houses collapsed, roof blown up, damaged; 31,642 houses were flooded.

- Regarding agriculture: 21,804 ha of rice and crops were damaged, 679,337 cattle and poultry died and swept away.

- Regarding irrigation: 15.5 km of dykes, embankments, 111 km of canals were damaged, landslide; 22.4 km of riverbank, erosion coast.

- Regarding traffic: 255 km of roads were eroded, about 0.91 million m3 of soil and stones eroded.

Estimated initial economic damage is about 12,536 billion.

RAIN AND STORM NO.9 IN OCTOBER 2020 MADE 237 PEOPLE DEAD AND LOSS;

ECONOMIC DAMAGE ABOUT VND 28,005 BILLION.
