Lao Cai: Heavy rains cause a lot of damage, a child dies from a flood

On October 6, heavy rains and floods coming from upstream caused an aquaculture pond in Ban Qua commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province to break, water overflowed into the house, causing baby Phi Thi Ngoc V, born in 2017 was swept away.

On October 6, a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province said that on the night of October 5 to the morning of October 6, heavy rains occurred in the Bat Xat district, causing some communes to such as Quang Kim, Ban Qua and Bat Xat town were heavily flooded. In particular, rain causes floods and landslides, causing a child to be swept away and killed. At around 5 o'clock on October 6, heavy rains and floods coming from upstream made a aquaculture pond of Mr. Phi Van Hoi's family, Ban Vai village, Ban Qua commune broken, water overflowed into the house, causing baby Phi. Thi Ngoc V, born in 2017 was swept away by the water. At 6 a.m. on the same day, the people and functional forces found her body. According to preliminary statistics of the agricultural sector of Bat Xat district, floods have washed away and left four houses in Ban Qua commune; inundated with tens of hectares of crops, winter crops, aquaculture ponds of people in Ban Vai village, Ban Qua commune; flooded fields of hundreds of hectares of Quang village, Quang Kim commune.

Areas of groups 5, 6, 7, 8 in Bat Xat town are deeply submerged in water, sometimes up to nearly 1m. Provincial roads 156A, 156B were positively landslided with a large amount of rock and soil, causing traffic congestion.

Mr. Si Trung Kien, Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Bat Xat district, said that heavy rain is forecast, the functional branch of Bat Xat district has propagated and mobilized people to take the initiative in prevention plans.

Currently, the People's Committee of Bat Xat district has directed specialized agencies to coordinate with the People's Committees of communes to direct the on-site forces to temporarily overcome the landslides to ensure transportation and drainage.

Bat Xat district police have arranged forces to command, guide, and channel traffic for safe traffic.

Commune authorities are directing the shock force to help people move, evacuate assets, overcome consequences; Statistics of damage to have a basis to support people to reproduce and stabilize their lives.
From the night of October 5 to the morning of October 6, there was heavy heavy rain in Bat Xat district, especially heavy rain in lowland communes. According to observed data, the average rainfall within 9 hours in Bat Xat town is over 415mm, Quang Kim commune has 311.8mm, and Trinh Tuong commune has 110mm.
