Plant shifting to response to drought

17:13:54, 05/05/2016 According to the forecast of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, due to El-Nino effects, dry season will extend until the end of August 2016; droughts and water scarcity will last until the end of 2016 summer-autumn crop in some local areas in the South Central Coast

The current important solution is to shift plant crops in response to drought. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is coordinating with the drought-affected regions to implement a number of plant shifting models in 2016 summer-autumn crops.

According to the Cultivation Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), to prepare for 2016 summer-autumn crop, it is very necessary for the localities to focus on immediate solutions, particularly insufficient water areas should produce 2 crops instead of 3 crops, or shift time frame of production to avoid drought; promote plants in short-term at water deficient areas to increase production efficiency and water saving. As for regions where there is no possibility to irrigate, changing or stopping cultivation is essential to avoid damages due to drought.

In the long term, provinces producing 3 crops/year such as Binh Dinh, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Khanh Hoa should consider to reduce 3 rice crops by 2 rice crops (Winter-Spring and Summer-Fall) in order to be more efficient and safer or 1 to 2 crops of vegetables which still yield high productivity .

Provinces producing 2 rice crops/year such as Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen have to continue to review water resource, irrigation to adjust breed schedule.

Notably, the midland and mountainous communes, districts using water from dam reservoirs with a small and medium capacity, havingsufficient water for winter-spring crops but insufficient water for  summer-autumn crops should consider extending the sowing schedule and use the short-day breedingto avoid rain by the end of the crop,or convert to short-day dry plants which need less water.
