Sakurajima volcano erupts, Japan activates highest level warning

9:39:16, 26/07/2022 A volcano on Japan's large western island of Kyushu has erupted, raising the warning for an eruption to level 5, the highest level.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that Sakurajima volcano erupted at about 20:55 on July 24 (local time).

According to Japan Public Radio and Television (NHK), there have been no reports of damage yet, but ash and volcanic rock can be seen falling within a radius of 1.5 km from the site.

Japan's Nuclear Regulatory Agency added that there were no signs of abnormality at the nearby Sendai nuclear power plant.

Despite issuing warnings for heavy rainfall in the area, the Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no possibility of mudslides in the area around the volcano.

Video of the scene shows red lava flowing down one side of the mountain's summit, with ash spewing from the volcano.

The nearest residential community, Kagoshima City, is across the volcano and about 2 miles away, but residents can still receive evacuation orders.
Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, and volcanic eruptions of varying degrees occur frequently. In 2019, it spewed ash 5.5 miles (nearly 9 km) high.
